 Melissa Powless Chacon, Executive Director

Melissa holds two degrees from the University of San Francisco (Public Administration and Organizational Development with a focus on Native American Non-Profits and Native Youth Services). She has over 20 years of nonprofit and tribal youth services experience throughout California. Her past titles have included Native Youth Pregnancy Prevention Coordinator, Youth Outreach Coordinator, Youth Program Supervisor/Manager, Native Youth Leadership Trainer, and more. Her professional work has specifically focused on increasing funding for Native youth programs within nonprofits and tribes through grant research, proposal writing, management and evaluation.

She has worked with ITS since 2010 as a Grant Writer and Development Specialist, which she originated key funding and built partnerships for ITS with funders such as, Nike N7, Notah Begay III Foundation (NB3), San Manuel Tribal Giving, Walmart, Coca Cola and Major League Baseball. Melissa’s vision for ITS is to create a quality organization with key partnerships and funding that reflect the exceptional work of the organization, tribes and partners. Overall, she aims to increase positive impact in the lives of ITS Youth by ensuring quality programs and services are meeting the needs of tribal youth today. 


 George Pojas, Program Manager

George Pojas has been connected to Inter Tribal Sports for many years as he assisted in the development of the La Jolla sports program where he also served as a coach for all ITS divisions. He comes to us with a behavior health background as he spent over a decade working with high risk populations with a focus in suicide prevention, character development, and other leadership programs. George is more than excited to continue his adventure with Inter Tribal Sports and is grateful to be a part of the community.

  Brenda Hernandez, Finance/Human Resources Manager 

Brenda Hernandez was born and raised in San Diego County and has lived in North County most of her life until moving to Temecula in 2003. She attended Palomar College in San Marcos, Ca to get her general education.  To continue her education she went through the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) to become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA).  She has taken college courses at Mira Costa College to learn how to use Autocad in order to make landscape designs and to be proficient in Microsoft office software.  She has taken courses in Quickbooks accounting in order to become skilled in bookkeeping.   She is currently working on becoming a Certified HR professional.  

Some of her  passions are working in her California Native plant garden and her vegetable and fruit garden, going on road trips and traveling to different places with her husband Leo and their 3 kids. She has a full house  including 1 dog named Toby, a cat Mango, 2 birds Pier and Holy, and a turtle named Tortie.  

Before joining ITS, Brenda's work history has included being a CNA  for Alzheimer's and Hospice patients.  She has also been an Office/Hr/Finance Manager for a landscape company and a small business owner.  She joined Inter Tribal Sports in December 2015 as the Finance Manager and in 2016 was promoted to Finance/Hr Manager.   She comes with many years of bookkeeping, customer service, scheduling,  organization and managerial skills. Brenda being Native (Creek) herself is excited to work with and is passionate about helping her community and an organization that helps tribal youth learn how to get healthy and fit. 

 Erika Jaimes, Administrative Assistant 

Erika was born and raised in Santa Ana, California. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Conservation and Management with a minor in Geospatial Analysis from Humboldt State University.  She was an active member of the Indian Natural Resource Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP) and the Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

She served as the current ITS AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer and Development Coordinator from November 2015 - November 2016.  At the conclusion of her service, Erika elected to continue with ITS for an extended two month term of service. She later became a Site Supervisor before becoming the Administrative Assistant in September 2017.

 Isaiah Thompson, Program Coordinator

Isaiah was born and raised on the San Pasqual Reservation. ITS helped foster a love of sports for Isaiah as he took every opportunity ITS provided. The passion that he developed from ITS has carried him through life. 

Isaiah attended Sherman Indian High School where he found success in one sport he had never tried until he went to high school; XC/Track. He was Section, State, and Nationally Ranked during his last two years at Sherman. He also had the pleasure of meeting and building relationships with a plethora of tribal members while at Sherman and graduated as the Valedictorian of his class. 

Isaiah accepted a scholarship to run division 1 cross country and track and field at the University of California, Irvine. Isaiah was a highly decorated athlete at UC Irvine. During his four years at the university he had the privilege to travel around the country and the world.Isaiah graduated from the University of California, Irvine in June 2017 with one bachelor’s degree in sociology and another one in educational sciences. He is super excited to be joining the Inter Tribal Sports team and looks forward to being involved in the community.
