Youth Ambassador Program

Our Youth Ambassador Program was created to help build tribal youth skills in leadership. Two youth ambassadors our first nominated by community members and selected by our Board cultural committee members. Once chose, our ambassadors will trained to be “tribal youth leaders” to help educate their peers on indigenous food knowledge and leadership skills by our staff, Native artists, and cultural consultants. These individuals will also attend the UNITY Conference on behalf of ITS as part of their training and experience.

ITS Youth Ambassadors Malaya Pojas & Adam Cruz  at the 2019 Unity Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Malaya Pojas (La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians) is a 14 year old girl currently enrolled as a Freshman at Valley Center High School with a record of having 3.0 GPA or higher in school. She is often found on the court/field playing sports such as: basketball, softball, soccer, and field hockey. Although, her favorite sport is basketball. When she is not playing sports, she volunteers at the local after-school program on her reservation mentoring students and acting as an assistant coach for Inter Tribal Sports games. She has also been a participant in various youth leadership organizations such as Associated Student Body, California Association of Student Leaders, and most recently picked as a Youth Ambassador for Inter Tribal Sports. Her future goals are to have a career in Physical Therapy or Psychology.
Along with having a good education and staying active, Malaya values culture to be very important. She take all her lessons in song, dance, language, food and history very seriously. Malaya understands the needs of her tribe and hopes to one day sit on Tribal Council.

Adam Cruz (La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians & Mojave) is a 14 year old boy currently enrolled as a Freshman at Valley Center High School. He is the oldest and only male in his family, with two younger sisters and another one on the way. Adam enjoys playing sports year-round, with basketball being his favorite. He enjoys being a youth coach and mentor to his peers and teaching them all that he has learned over the years from his experiences. He strongly believes that programs like ITS are a great resource for youth because it teaches them sportsmanship, leadership, the benefits of being healthy, and gives youth the opportunity to pursue sports at a higher level. Adam aspires to play collegiate sports while majoring in Business Management. One day he wishes to own and run his own company.

Adam is a very humble human being, and seeks to accomplish many great things in his life. His role model has always been his mother because of the amazing example she sets for not only her family, but her whole community.
